LET THERE BE LIGHT

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John doesn’t begin his good news account with the birth of Jesus. Instead, he goes all the way back to the beginning of the world and proclaims Jesus was there even then.

John’s starting point is not the story of Jesus’ humanity, because he wants his readers to know Jesus was present from the very beginning.

John says Jesus is the Creator of all things - Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

This Jesus is God. He is the One who said - Let there be light. And there was light.

And even more - In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

John is clear. When God said, Let there be light, the first ray of sunlight that illuminated the dark world contained a hint of what was to come. One day the Source of light - the Light of the World - would shine in person.

He comes as a Savior - dispelling the darkness of sin by forgiveness through His death. And He comes as a Teacher - enlightening the heart with the truths of God in His life.

Students of this Teacher come to His light and walk together with Him in a path that grows ever brighter. Ultimately journeying to the light of God’s very presence!

Without this Teacher, people stumble in darkness.

Jesus of course was the light.

He shines in the dark world still today.

And our quest as students is the opposite of the darkness - to understand and learn from the creator himself.
