Why does the Teacher curse the fig tree?
Was it because it had no fruit or because it appeared to have fruit, when in fact it did not?
Jesus came to the fig tree – but found nothing on it except leaves.
This is not we expect. If a fig tree has leaves, it should have fruit!
This is a metaphor for a religion that looks promising. People are attracted at first. It looks like a place where you could find spiritual nourishment.
But, it’s just leaves!
It represents a faith that leaves us as empty as when we first came to it. It only looked good on the outside.
A genuine faith is not all leaves, but also produces the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
This is the character of Christ reproduced in His students’ lives!
Only in a vital relationship with the Teacher can we satisfy our desire to be more like Him.
Otherwise, it’s fruitless!
Hey Kevin, Hope you are feeling ok.
