I BELIEVE, BUT…

I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!

An interesting prayer, don’t you think?

It comes from the father of a child who needs a healing touch. Perhaps he has doubt now because Jesus’ disciples tried unsuccessfully to help him.

At any rate, the dialogue between this anxious father and Jesus is revealing. First, he asks Jesus for help – But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.

Jesus’ response is almost like - Are you kidding?

“If you can?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes."

It is then the father expresses his faith but asks for help to overcome his reservations.

Isn’t this the way it is with all of us. Our faith is very often mixed with a certain amount of doubt. We believe and yet we don’t! Not really.

Factually we know God can do anything. Actually we wonder if He will! We believe, but…

And because of these doubts much of what is possible for our lives is only untapped potential.

For there is a huge difference between believing God is able to do something in our lives and that He will do it. That difference is a belief that is so unmixed with doubt it may be properly called trust!

Here the Teacher reminds us - Everything is possible for him who believes!

How many new and wonderful blessings wait for us beyond the resolution of all doubt! Lord, help our unbelief!

  1. We know that "without faith it is impossible to please God," but do we know that there are 2 sides of faith in God?

Denny, you hit it on the head here!

"And without faith it is impossible to please God," is the beginning of Heb 11:6, yet notice the comma, and not a period. Do we know the rest of the verse?

"because anyone who comes to Him must believe that he exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him."

    1. He is.
    2. He rewards.

Both are needed to come to Him (God)

The teacher explains this as well in Mark 9.

Amazing when you think about it:

EVERYTHING is possible for him who believes.
